Sibel Hanım
The Museum of InnocenceSibel Hanım is Kemal Basmacı’s intended fiancée when the story begins, and the partner with whom he expects to formalize a socially prominent engagement. Her relationship with him brings together Westernized self-image, personal trust, and the weight of prevailing expectations about sex before marriage; her insistence that a counterfeit handbag cannot be worn to the engagement party gives that planned celebration an unexpectedly revealing complication.
Identity and Engagement
Sibel Hanım is presented as Kemal Basmacı’s future bride while he is thirty and she is preparing to marry him. Their engagement party is planned for mid-June, with Kemal’s parents involved in its preparations. Sibel’s father wants the celebration to be as extravagant as a wedding, and Kemal’s mother helps plan it. The engagement is therefore not merely a private promise: it is a family occasion shaped by wealth, status, and public display.
Relationship and Social Expectations
Sibel Hanım has a modern outlook and has brought feminist ideas back from Europe, but her views about sexual intimacy remain shaped by the conventions of the time. She and Kemal have a private relationship at his office, yet she is uncomfortable with the implications of intimacy in that workplace. The contrast between her modern ideas and her reserve points to the limits of the freedom the couple appears to share.
Sibel Hanım had first become intimate with Kemal eleven months earlier, after she believed his intentions were serious and that he could be trusted to marry her. By the time of the narration, she considers their arrangement to have lasted long enough and expects marriage to follow. Her expectation is not treated as a casual preference: the social meaning attached to her decision makes Kemal’s intention to marry her feel like a responsibility as well as a choice.
The Handbag and the Engagement
The events that alter Kemal’s life begin when Sibel Hanım notices a Jenny Colon handbag in a shop window as they walk along Valikonağı Avenue. He returns to the boutique the next day to buy it for her. When he presents the gift, she appreciates the thought behind it but explains that she cannot carry it at their engagement party: the bag is an imitation, while she has already chosen the handbag she will use for the occasion.
The exchange places the couple’s polished engagement plans beside a question of authenticity. Sibel Hanım’s objection is specific and practical: however considerate the gift, a fake cannot serve as the accessory she intends to carry before their families and guests. In this early episode, her discernment interrupts Kemal’s attempt to make a romantic gesture and makes the handbag a pointed counterpoint to the public image the engagement is being prepared to present.
